Supermodel Iman is Ottawa bound for TV show

OTTAWA - International model Iman is coming to Ottawa this summer for the taping of the TV-reality series Project Runway Canada.

The 52-year-old supermodel and wife of David Bowie is expected here in early August for the 12 episodes of the Global-TV show that will be filmed here. No word on whether Bowie will accompany his wife to the nation's capital, although producers hope the British pop star makes an appearance.

"We have no confirmation on whether David Bowie is coming because we would all love to see him in Ottawa," said Andrea Gabourie, a supervising producer at Insight Production Company Ltd. in Toronto, which is making the reality series.

"They are certainly private people and they both have busy lives outside of the work that they do so at this point we don't anticipate it, but you never know."

The reality series, now in its second season, features 12 young fashion designers vying for the title of Canada's top fashion designer. It was seen last year on the Slice TV-network and was primarily filmed in Toronto but this year producers have chosen to move to Ottawa, except for the finale which goes back to Toronto.

Series mentor Brian Bailey is returning and so are a panel of industry experts, yet to be named. The competing fashion designers are expected to be announced in the next few weeks.

Ms. Gabourie said Iman worked well as host of the series last season and she was eager to return.

"We had a wonderful experience working with her and she's an absolute legend in the fashion industry. She's an incredible woman, smart, strong and professional. One of the most interesting things about her is that she has a wonderful sense of humour," she said.

Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, Iman went to high school in Egypt and afterwards lived in Kenya, where her parents still reside. She is fluent in five languages and she studied political science at the University of Nairobi. She was recruited as a model by American photographer in 1975 and moved to the United States, where she began her modeling career, landing some of the biggest magazine covers and establishing herself as a supermodel.

She married Mr. Bowie in 1992 and they have one daughter, Alexandra Zahra "Lexi" Jones. The couple live in New York City and London.

Iman will be in Ottawa at different periods in August although her schedule has not been finalized, said Ms. Gabourie.

Producers are shooting the episodes at an "undisclosed" location in the city to avoid onlookers wanting to observe the filming, said Ms. Gabourie.

"As much as we'd like to share the location with people we'll have to share it with them afterwards otherwise we'll have people hanging around the set trying to get in. It's a competition series so it's highly confidential."
